Commands

Below is a table of commands a thief can obtain along with the skills requirements; you can use commands to enhance your natural abilities through skill and energy (guild points). Using commands will require that you have some guild points in the skill tree that the command uses. So if you want to ambush, you'll need covert guild points, if you want to value, you'll need people guild points. You gain guild points through advancing covert.points etc.

With the exceptions of peek (learned automatically) and conceal (taught automatically by Gassy Holmsfirth in the Ankh-Morpork guild), all the commands can be learned from any Recruit Master by politely asking them to teach you. You can also ask to be told about higher level commands, which will tell you which skills you need to advance to learn a certain command.

Useful Commands

Syntax is probably the most important command you can remember in the discworld, it will provide information about every other command.

  • syntax
    • Displays usage information about any other command and should be used when you are unsure how to interact with a command.
  • help here / help [object]
    • Displays usage information about how to interact with room or object

Name ambush- Set an attack on someone.
Syntax ambush <person>
ambush
Description
The ambush command causes you to attack with strength based on your skill bonus in the relevant subskill of covert.stealth. The attempt costs a total of 75 covert points, with the difficulty based on the ambient light of your environment and the total amount of light on yourself and things you are carrying and on your target's bonus in other.perception. You can ambush unarmed or with any melee weapon(s) but you will need a sufficient bonus in covert.items.weapons to manage it well. Some weapons are specifically suited to ambushing and will be more effective. Ambushing is done in two stages. First you find a suitable location and use 'ambush' to lay the ambush in that room which costs 25 guild points. Then, when a suitable target enters the location use 'ambush <person>' to leap out and attack which costs an additional 50 guild points.

Example > ambush
You find a suitable place to hide and lay an ambush. A merchant arrives from the north.

> ambush merchant
You smash the merchant.

Name case - Checks a potential victim for thefts.
Syntax case <person>
Description This command lets you check a potential victim to see if a theft would be viable, in much the same way that "consider" helps you to decide whether someone would offer a reasonable fight or not. Casing a person depends on your bonus in covert.casing.person for accuracy and your bonus in the relevant stealth subskill to see if you're noticed, although you won't necessarily be told if you are noticed. Every attempt costs 20 covert guild points.
Example > case merchant

Name conceal - Conceals an item about your person.
Syntax conceal <object>
Description This command lets you conceal something on your person so that other people looking at you won't be able to see it unless they're very perceptive. It uses your bonus in covert.hiding.object and costs 10 covert points to make the attempt. You cannot conceal something you are holding or wearing, and suitable clothing will make hiding things easier.
Example > conceal ring
You conceal the brass ring.

Name crack - Crack a safe.
Syntax crack <object>
Description With this command you will be able to crack safes. It will cost you 50 guild points for each attempt to open a safe. If you fail it will cost an additional 50. It uses the skill covert.lockpick.safes for determining your bonus. You will need a set of safe cracking tools, and the better the tools, the easier the safe will open.
Example > crack safe
You start to work on the lock on the safe.
You start to study the safe, making notes on its construction, the locking mechanism in particular.
You finish your study of the safe and believe you have the skills necessary to crack it open.
The safe has a classic three-wheel tumbler lock with a dial on the front panel for entering the combination. The dial is etched with one hundred lines, numbered 0 to 99, running clockwise around the perimeter. A single hair-thin line is marked on the case by the top of the dial for reading the number off it. Having studied the lock you understand that by turning the dial and listening carefully to the mechanism you will be able to pinpoint the combination number of each tumbler wheel. Entering the correct sequence of combination numbers in turn using alternate dial rotations will unlock the safe.

Name disable - Disable a trap.
Syntax disable <object>
Description With this command you will be able to disable a trap in an item. It will cost you 80 guild points for each attempt. It uses the skill covert.items.traps and covert.lockpick.traps to determine your success. There is a risk when disarming a trap that it will go off and injure you if you aren't skilled enough.
Example > disable east
You start to work on the east door.

You sucessfully disarm the trap.

Name filch - Steals an item from someone.
Syntax filch <object> in <object>

filch <object> in <object> of <object>

filch <object> from <object>
Description This command allows you to pickpocket people and steal worn or held items. It will cost you 100 guild points for each item you attempt to steal. It uses the skill covert.manipulation.stealing for determining your bonus. It is more difficult to steal heavier things. Note: This will leave a receipt, as in the Discworld books.
Example > filch blowpipe in cloak of brandobas

You filch a blowpipe from brandobas.

Name hide - Allows you to hide from other people.
Syntax hide
hide stop
Description This command lets you hide so that you won't be seen except by very perceptive people. It uses your bonus in covert.hiding.person and costs 10 covert points to make the attempt. Using "hide stop" will bring you out of hiding.
Example > hide

You hide.

Name lpick - Pick the lock of something.
Syntax pick <object>
Description With this command you will be able to pick locks in doors and containers. It will cost you 30 guild points for each attempt to open a lock. It uses the skill covert.lockpick.doors for determining your bonus. You will need a lockpick, and the better the lockpick, the easier the lock will open.
Example > pick east door

You start to work on the lock on the east door.

You hear a satisfying click as you professionally pick the lock.

Name palm - Silently pick up something.
Syntax palm <object>

palm <object> from <object>
palm <object> [in]to [my] hands

palm <object> from <object> [in]to [my] hands
Description This command allows you to silently pick up an object either from the ground or from another object. If you use the special "to my hands" argument, you will also attempt to quietly hold the item. The use of this command will cost you 5 covert points. It uses the skill covert.manipulation.palming for determining how succesful you are at not being seen.
Example > palm coin

You palm the coin.

> palm katana from katana scabbard to my right hand

With your right hand, you quietly draw the katana from the katana scabbard.

Name plant - Plant object covertly on someone.
Syntax plant <object> on <object>
Description This command allows you to plant things on players without generating a give message. The use of this command will cost you 5 guild points for every object you plant on someone else. It uses the skill covert.manipulation.passing for determining the skill bonus.
Example > plant frog on allana
You plant a frog on Allana.

Name probe - Probe an object to determine what kind of lock it has and if it's trapped.
Syntax probe <object>
Description With this command you will be able to determine how difficulty it will be to pick a lock or crack a safe. It will cost you 40 guild points. It uses the skill covert.casing.place and covert.items.traps to determine your success.
Example > probe east

You start to study the east door.

You think this job looks as though it will be easy and that you will
need a set of lockpicks. Hidden inside the lock is a small ampule
which, if touched by an unwary tool would trigger a puff of poisonous

gas. It looks as though the trap will be very easy to avoid.

Name scope - Scopes out a place for shoplifting.
Syntax scope <item>
Description This command will give you an idea of how easily you think you'll be able to steal an item from a shop. It is the equivalent of case for shops. Scoping an item depends on your bonus is covert.casing.place for accuracy and your bonus in the relevant stealth subskill to see if you're noticed, although you won't necessarily be told if you are noticed. Every attempt costs 20 covert guild points.
Example > scope brooch
You guess that it would not be too easy to steal a silver brooch from Sylver's.

Name shoplift - Steals an object from a shop.
Syntax shoplift <object>
Description This command allows you to steal things from shops. It will cost you 50 guild points for everything you attempt to steal. It uses the skill covert.manipulation.stealing for determining your bonus. It is more difficult to shoplift heavier things.
Example > shoplift bucket
You steal a bucket from the armoury.

Name slip - Slip things silently to an object or person.
Syntax slip <object> [in]to <object>
slip <object> from [my] hands
Description This command allows you to slip things to players or containers without others in the room seeing. You can use the special destination 'here' to covertly drop an item. You can also 'slip <object> from [my] hands' to covertly unhold an object. The use of this command will cost you 5 covert points. It uses the skill covert.manipulation.passing for determining how succesful you are at not being seen.
Example > slip frog to khaos

You slip a frog to Khaos.

> slip katana from my left hand

You quietly set the katana down.

Name snatch - Snatch something off someone and run away.
Syntax snatch <object> from <object> leaving <direction>
Description This command allows you to snatch things from people. It will cost you 25 guild points for everything you attempt to steal. It uses the skill covert.manipulation.stealing for determining your bonus. It is more difficult to steal heavier things. Since snatching is a very unsophisticated method of stealing you'll almost certainly be spotted so you have to specify a direction to run in. Note: As per the books, all thieves will leave a receipt, but non-members will not. There will still be evidence, and it's up to you to sort it out.
Example > snatch 5 dollars from ceres leaving south
You snatch 5 dollars from ceres.

> snatch 10 pence from beggar leaving northeast
You snatch 10 pence from beggar.

Name sneak - Sneakily move around.
Syntax sneak <level|stop>
Description This command controls how stealthily you attempt to move. There are three levels of sneaking 'high', 'medium', 'low' and 'stop'. The level determines how careful you are in attempting to sneak, thus it affects the likelihood that you will be spotted and the guild points it takes. With sneak set to high you will use all your skill and lots of guild points. At low some of your skill and fewer guild points and medium is somewhere in the middle. You can also stop moving sneakily using 'sneak stop' or review your current sneak level with just 'sneak'. When sneaking every move will cost covert guild points, how many will depend on the level of sneaking you are using.
Example > sneak high

You will now attempt to move stealthily.

> sneak stop

You stop sneaking.

Name steal - Steal something from someone.
Syntax steal <item> from <living>
Description This command allows you to steal things from people. It will cost you 50 guild points for everything you attempt to steal. It uses the skill covert.manipulation.stealing for determining your bonus. It is more difficult to steal heavier things. Note: As per the books, all thieves will leave a receipt, but non-members will not. There will still be evidence, and it's up to you to sort it out.
Example > steal bucket from brandobas
You steal a bucket from brandobas.
